Setting up bank account vaulting for B2B

Bank account vaulting lets customers securely save bank account information so that their bank accounts can be debited without having to enter the information every time.

This feature is available only to merchants in the United States that use Shopify Payments and to customers with United States bank accounts.

Bank accounts can be vaulted only by B2B customers. You can't vault bank account details on behalf of your customer.

Customer experience for vaulting bank accounts

B2B customers can select a checkbox to vault their bank account information at checkout. They can also log in to customer accounts to add a vaulted bank account to a company location. When a customer vaults a bank account, they agree to the mandate and give permission for that bank account to be used for the current order and future orders.

When a bank account is vaulted to a company location, all customers with permissions for that location can use the bank account at checkout. Customers with permissions for a company location can also manage vaulted bank accounts from customer accounts, such as updating bank account details or deleting a bank account.

Debit a vaulted bank account for an order with payment terms

During checkout for an order with payment terms, customers can specify which bank account to debit at the end of the payment terms. The bank account isn't automatically debited when the payment terms expire. You can manually debit the bank account from your Shopify admin, or you can automate debiting with Shopify Flow.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Customers > Companies.

  2. Click the company, and then click the location that's associated with the order you want to charge for.

  3. Click the order that you want to charge for.

  4. In the Payment section, click Collect payment, and then click the bank account that you want to debit.

  5. Click Charge to debit the amount displayed to the chosen bank account.

Change the bank account to debit for an order with payment terms

Your customers can't update the bank account that's associated with an order, but you can change the bank account on your customer's behalf.

If the customer has only one bank account vaulted, then they need to add another bank account to their customer account profile before you can change it. You must receive approval from the customer before you change the associated bank account.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Customers > Companies.

  2. Click the company, and then click the location that's associated with the order you want to debit the bank account for.

  3. Click the order that you want to change the bank account for.

  4. In the Payment section, click Collect payment, and then click the bank account that you want to charge.

  5. Click Charge to charge the amount displayed to the chosen bank account.

Debit a vaulted bank account for a draft order

You can debit a vaulted bank account for a draft order created by you or your staff in the Shopify admin. This captures payment and creates an order.

To debit a vaulted bank account for a draft order, you need to be the store owner or be a staff member with the Draft orders > Charge vaulted bank account store permission.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders > Drafts.

  2. Click the draft order that you want to debit a vaulted bank account for.

  3. In the Payment section, click Collect payment, and then click the bank account that you want to debit.

  4. Click Charge to debit the amount displayed to the chosen bank account.

Using vaulted bank accounts with order review

When you configure a company location to submit orders as drafts for review, customers can still vault a bank account during checkout. An order is submitted as draft for you to review and the bank account isn't debited immediately. When you confirm the order, you can debit the bank account that has the label Selected at checkout.

Automatically debit vaulted bank accounts with Shopify Flow

You can automatically debit vaulted bank accounts for orders with payment terms using Shopify Flow. You can create a workflow that starts with the Payment schedule is due trigger, and then add the Charge vaulted payment for B2B order action.

Delete a vaulted bank account for a company location

When you delete a vaulted bank account, you can't debit it for any future orders and your customers can't view or select it at checkout. You can still debit the bank account for any existing orders with payment terms that were placed using that bank account.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Customers > Companies.

  2. Click the company, and then click the location that you want to delete a vaulted bank account from.

  3. In the company location details section, click Horizontal menu, and then click Manage payment methods.

  4. For the bank account that you want to delete, click Horizontal menu, and then click Remove payment method.

  5. Click Remove payment method to confirm that you want to delete the bank account.
