Verifying your identity as a Shopify Partner

You might be asked to verify your identity before you complete certain actions, such as requesting collaborator access to a merchant's store. Identity verification helps protect merchants and maintains trust in the Shopify Partner ecosystem.

To complete identity verification, you need to provide a photo of a government-issued ID and pass a selfie check using your device camera. If verification fails, then the partner action won't be available until you complete it successfully.

What to expect during identity verification

Here's what to expect when you verify your identity:

  • You'll complete the verification through a Shopify technology partner.
  • You might need to use a mobile device or a browser with camera access.
  • You'll be asked to capture a government-issued photo ID.
  • You'll complete a selfie or liveness check to confirm your identity.
  • If verification is required, then you must complete it before submitting the collaborator request.
  • Shopify Support can help troubleshoot the verification flow, but can't accept ID documents directly or manually approve verification.

When identity verification is required

You might need to verify your identity when requesting collaborator access. If verification is required, then complete it before submitting the request.

Identity verification is required for sending a collaborator request only. It doesn't apply to existing collaborations where a merchant has already granted you access.

If you've already completed a successful identity verification check, then you might not need to complete it again for another collaborator request.

If you're unable to complete verification after following the troubleshooting steps on this page, then contact Shopify Support. Support can help troubleshoot the verification process, but can't manually approve or bypass verification.

What you need

To complete identity verification, you need the following:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID.
  • A device with a working camera, such as a mobile phone, laptop, or desktop webcam.
  • Permission for your browser to access your camera.
  • A stable internet connection.

Complete identity verification

If you're asked to verify your identity, then complete the verification flow from the prompt in your partner account.

Steps:

  1. From the identity verification prompt, click Start.
  2. Review the information shown and accept the consent step to continue.
  3. Use your device camera to take a photo of the front and back of your ID document, or follow the instructions to upload your ID if that option is available.
  4. Complete the selfie check when prompted.
  5. Submit your verification.
  6. After your verification is submitted, return to the partner action you were trying to complete.

If your verification isn't submitted successfully, then begin the process again and review the troubleshooting guidance on this page.

Guidance for completing verification

Providing your ID document

To help your ID document pass verification, follow these guidelines:

  • Use an original, valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Capture a clear, well-lit image without glare.
  • Use a live photo of your ID with your mobile device instead of a photocopy, screenshot, scan, or edited image.
  • Make sure all four corners of the ID are visible.
  • Place your ID against a dark, plain background.
  • Don't block, cover, or edit any part of your ID document in the image.

Completing the selfie check

To help your selfie check pass verification, follow these guidelines:

  • Allow your browser to access your camera.
  • Remove sunglasses, masks, and anything else covering your face.
  • Use ambient lighting and avoid sitting in front of bright or overhead lights.
  • If your desktop webcam image is low quality, then try completing the check on a mobile device.

Troubleshooting identity verification

If you can't complete identity verification, then try these general steps first:

  • Refresh the page, and then restart the verification flow from the prompt.
  • Make sure that your device camera works and your browser has permission to use it.
  • Turn off VPNs, ad blockers, and privacy extensions, and then try again.
  • Make sure that pop-ups and redirects aren't blocked for Shopify.
  • Try a different supported browser or device.

If the problem continues, then find your issue in the following sections.

Troubleshoot the verification flow not opening

If the verification flow won't open, then try the following:

  • Clear your browser cache, and then try again.
  • Turn off browser extensions, such as VPNs, ad blockers, or privacy extensions, and then try again.
  • Try a different browser or device.
  • Make sure that pop-ups and redirects aren't blocked for Shopify.
Troubleshoot camera issues

If your camera isn't working, then try the following:

  • Check that your browser has permission to access your camera.
  • Close other apps that might be using your camera.
  • Try a different browser or device.
Troubleshoot an ID or selfie that isn't accepted

If your ID or selfie isn't accepted, then try the following:

  • Retake your photo in a well-lit space without glare.
  • Make sure that all corners of your ID are visible.
  • Use a plain, dark background for your ID document.
  • Remove anything blocking your face for the selfie check.
  • Confirm that the ID belongs to the person completing verification.
Troubleshoot declined consent or an exited flow

If you decline consent or close the verification flow before finishing, then verification won't complete. Restart the collaborator request and complete the verification flow again to continue.

Troubleshoot a message that verification can't confirm your identity

Retry with a clear photo of a valid government-issued ID, and then complete the selfie check in a well-lit space. If you still can't complete verification, then contact Shopify Support with a screenshot of the message and the approximate time you tried. Don't send your ID document or selfie to Support.

Troubleshoot being blocked after submitting verification

Verification can take time to process. If you still can't complete the partner action after your verification is submitted, then contact Shopify Support with the action you were trying to complete, the approximate time you submitted verification, and a screenshot of any error message.

Contact Support

If you've tried the troubleshooting steps and still can't complete identity verification, then contact Shopify Support. Don't send your ID document or selfie to Support. Only submit identity documents through the verification flow.
